SOFTBALL EDGED OUT BY GEORGETOWN; ELIMINATED FROM MSC TOURNAMENT

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson softball team saw its run in the Mid-South Conference Tournament end after losing 2-1 to No. 5-seed Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday at Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (38-9) flashed the leather early on with a trio of outstanding defensive plays. Carissa Summers snagged a sharply hit ground ball down the third-base line from the first batter of the game.

One inning later, Zakiya Sizemore got some action in her second start in left field. Georgetown (27-19) lifted a ball toward the fence, but Sizemore reached up and tracked it down on the run at the warning track. One batter later, Makea-Al Kaluau showed off her vertical at second base by jumping up into the air and catching a line drive to rob the Tigers of a hit.

Lindsey Wilson got the scoring going in the bottom of the second when Elizabeth Funk sent a moon shot to center field for a solo home run, her second of the season.

After a scoreless third, Georgetown fought back in the fourth inning with three hits in a row to open the frame and tied the game. Fortunately, the Blue Raiders turned a double play on a ground ball to Hannah Epperson, who threw to Desiree Chang for the out at first base. Chang noticed the Tiger on second was off the bag and tossed the ball to Lyric Houston, who tagged the baserunner out. However, with a runner still on third, Georgetown notched an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.

Lindsey Wilson had multiple opportunities to score over the next couple of innings, including a chance in the seventh. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases with one out but could not push the tying run across the plate.

Epperson received the loss despite allowing only two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts over four innings pitched.

Funk was the only Blue Raider to record multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 with the team's only run and RBI.

Lindsey Wilson received a spot in the NAIA National Tournament and will be one of the sites to host during the opening round. The tournament begins on May 17.
