Box Score 2 LAWRENCEBURG, Ga. – No. 23-ranked Lindsey Wilson Softball team split their games for the second straight day, defeating RV Reinhardt (Ga.) but then suffered an extra-inning set back against No. 11 Georgia Gwinnett.
Lindsey Wilson once again won convincingly over the Eagles 6-1 but then fell short in the nightcap 6-5 to the Grizzlies.
Game 1: LWC 6, RU 1
Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 2-1/2 innings. Kylie Brown opened the scoring in the first on a double that scored Lexi Isable. Isable later scored in the third inning as she was able to steal home due to a pickoff attempt of Brown who beat out a throw to second on her stealing attempt.
Reinhardt scored their only run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning thanks to two hits. It trimmed the LWC lead down to one.
Lindsey Wilson added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to two passed balls that allowed LWC to score. The Blue Raiders pushed two more runs home in the sixth inning. Desire Chang grounded out but the play allowed Zakiya Sizemore to score. Mikayla Marquez then managed a sac fly that score Brianna Griffiths.
Sadie Werner picked up the win, going all seven innings. The freshman allowed one run on five hits and struck out three across 25 batters.
Game 2: LWC 5, GGC 6
The Grizzlies won the game in the ninth inning after a scoreless first extra inning. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, GGC started with a runner in scoring position at second base. With one out, a ground out pushed the winning run to third base. Lea McFadden then hit a dribbler up the middle that Brianna Griffiths was unable to field cleanly, on a chopped-up infield, allowing the winning run to score.
Lindsey Wilson opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, a lead that held till the fourth. With the bases loaded, Sam Sims singled to left on a ball that scored Alexis Garayzar. Marquez then reached base on a fielder choice but the play drove home Sizemore who scored from third.
Georgia Gwinnett leveled the score in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs before taking a 3-2 lead with another score in the fifth.
The Blue Raiders tied up the game in the sixth inning. Griffiths reached base on a fielder's choice but Elizabeth Funk would score. Moments later, Desiree Chang scored the game-tying run, but Garayzar grounded into a double play killing the LWC momentum.
It was the Blue Raiders final run of the contest.
Emily Boin went seven innings racking up five strikeouts with seven hits. Werner came on in relief to record the loss adding three strikeouts to a total of six on the day.
Lindsey Wilson returns to the diamond on Feb. 15 when they head to Barbourville, Ky., to take on Union (Ky.) in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for Noon CT.
