Softball Dominate in Doubleheader Sweep of Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – No. 23-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball downed Union (Ky.) twice on Tuesday afternoon claiming both games of the doubleheader after outscoring the Bulldogs (0-4) 22-3 on the day with a shutout and six-inning run-rule win. LWC (4-2) claimed game one 6-0 before exploding to a 16-3 victory in game two.

Makea-Al Kaluau was dominant at the plate, going 5-for-7 with a .714 batting average and a team-high six RBI's. As a team, the Blue Raiders hit .334 percent while racking up 10 hits and 19 RBIs. Emily Boin and Sadie Werner each picked up wins in the center circle for Lindsey Wilson.

Union managed 10 hits across the two games with their only runs coming in the first inning of game two on a three-run home run.

GAME 1: LWC 6, UNION 0

Lindsey Wilson wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning as leadoff batter Mikayla Marquez opened play reaching on an error. Marquez advanced into scoring position after stealing second. Kaluau's sacrifice fly to deep right field secured the game's first run.

Lexi Isable then came to the plate and hit a solo shot over the center-field fence to give LWC a 2-0 lead early.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Blue Raiders tacked on three more runs in the third. Sam Sims led off the inning with a double – her first of three hits in the game – to center. Marquez put runners on second and third when she reached base for the second time on a Bulldog fielding error.

Kaluau doubled down out to leftfield, producing her second and third of four RBIs in the contest.

Lindsey Wilson made use of Union's third error of the afternoon when Isable reached on the third baseman's miscue on a bunt. Kalaua rounded third and scored on the play from second base.

Leading 5-0, the Blue Raiders tacked on their final run in the fourth inning. Kelsie Bostock led off with a double to right as Sims then singled before putting runners on second and third when she made a successful steal attempt.

Kaluau doubled to right-center field on a play that scored Bostock, securing what would be the final run of the afternoon.

Boin (2-0) got the start in the center circle where she retired eight of 17 batters across five innings pitched. Kaylee Covey came on in relief, pitching the final two innings, as both pitchers allowed just two hits.

Sims was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and added a 1.333 slugging percentage and two stolen bases. Kaluau went 2-for-3 as Lindsey Wilson finished with seven hits while limiting the Bulldogs to four.

GAME 2: LWC 16, UNION 3

Lindsey Wilson opened game two scoring in the first inning and loading the bases twice despite not recording a hit in the inning.

Kaluau and Isable reached on walks as Kylie Brown loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch. Elizabeth Funk managed an RBI on a groundout to the pitcher that scored Kaluau. Alexis Garayzar was hit by a pitch during the next at-bat to load the bases for the second time but Union was able to secure the final out of the inning.

The Bulldogs scored their first runs of the day in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on the corners, Sarah Lowe blasted a three-run shot to straightaway center field.

Lindsey Wilson was able to regain the lead in the third inning thanks to two hits, a hit by pitch, two wild pitches, and a Union error. Isable reached base to lead off the inning after being hit as Brown then singled to center. Two wild pitches allowed Isable to score the first run of the inning with Brown advancing to third.

Brooklynn Ott drove home the final two runs in the inning on a double down the right-field line, scoring both Brown and Elizabeth Funk. Funk walked earlier in the inning and advanced to scoring position at second with a stolen base.

Lindsey Wilson broke away in the fifth and sixth innings after putting away a combined 12 runs.

With runners on the corners in the fifth, Sizemore singled up the middle to score Jordan Balz who reach base on an error to open the inning. Kaluau then doubled to deep left field to drive home Sims who reached base via a single. With the bases loaded, Funk doubled down the left-field line to score three Blue Raiders in Sizemore, Kaluau, and Isable.

Funk later scored the final run in the inning off a single by Garayzar and a fielding error on the centerfielder.

Sizemore and Kaluau opened the sixth inning with doubles as Kaluau drove home Sizemore for the opening run. Brown was then hit by a pitch as Funk walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Kaluau to score.

Garayzar produced an RBI single to score Brown before Derreck hit a three-run home run over the centerfield fence. After a clean bottom half of the inning, Lindsey Wilson claimed the run-rule victory after six innings of play.

Werner (2-2) collected the win after entering the game in the second inning to pitch 3-2/3 innings. She retired five batters without allowing a hit. Olivia Franceshi opened the game pitching 1-1/3 innings allowing five hits and three runs. Covey closed out the game once again pitching the final inning with one strikeout.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the field on Saturday when they stay on the road and take on Bryan (Tenn.) in a doubleheader beginning at Noon CT.
