Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Lindsey Wilson baseball split a doubleheader to host William Carey (Miss.) on Saturday at Milton Wheeler Field.
The Blue Raiders (1-2) took today's opener 5-3 before falling in the final game of the three-game series 12-9. Both contests today were seven-inning games.
GAME 1
Lindsey Wilson used a three-run sixth inning to come from behind in a 6-5 win, the Blue Raiders' first win of the 2022 season and Ethan Utley's first as Lindsey Wilson's head coach.
Koby Wall's two-run double in the sixth proved to be the difference, erasing a 3-2 deficit in the latter stages of the game. Jake McDaniel -- who retired nine of 10 batters he faced -- made the lead stand up in the win. McDaniel allowed just one hit while striking out three over his three scoreless innings of relief.
Wall started the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run single to give Lindsey Wilson the 2-0 lead. Wall finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and four RBIs.
The Crusaders scored three times over the next three innings to take a 3-2 lead before the Blue Raiders responded for the win.
Gabe Board joined Wall with two hits in the game.
Josh Barnett got his first career collegiate start, working four innings while allowing a pair of earned runs on five hits. He struck out two in the no-decision.
GAME 2
Unlike game one where the Blue Raiders battled back, Lindsey Wilson led in game two but could not hold on to the advantage in a 12-9 loss.
Lindsey Wilson scored four times in the first inning to take an early lead. The Blue Raiders led 4-1 after the first inning, 5-1 after three, 8-6 through 4-1/2 innings, and 9-8 through 5-1/2 innings only to have William Carey come back each time.
Lindsey Wilson had a season-high 13 hits as eight Blue Raiders recorded at least one hit in the game.
Nico Martinez led the offensive attack with three hits while Board, Chance Stayton, and Austin Rayo each chipped in with two.
The Blue Raiders led 9-8 entering the decisive bottom of the sixth inning. The Crusaders blasted back-to-back home runs to ultimately take a 12-8 lead en route to the win.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Feb. 9, as the Blue Raiders host Brescia (Ky.) in its season home opener at Egnew Park.
