Baseball spits doubleheader with Shawnee State; Claim Series 2-1

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team split their Friday afternoon doubleheader with Shawnee State in Mid-South Conference road action. The split gave the Blue Raiders the three-game series as LWC claimed yesterday's single contest.

Lindsey Wilson has picked up three MSC series win so far this season having also claimed three game series wins over Pikeville (Ky.) and Thomas More (Ky.) to move to 6-3 in conference action.

Game 1: LWC 0, SSU 7

Lindsey Wilson was blanked in the first game, falling 7-0 to Shawnee State. The Bears scored one run in the third inning before taking full control of the contest in the sixth inning with six more runs.

The Blue Raiders managed just seven hits as Michael Sizemore had three and Nico Martinez added two of his own. Cohen Achen pitched 5-1/3 innings allowing six hits and four runs with five strikeouts across 21 batters faced.

Shawnee State was slightly more effective at the plate with 10 hits for the game. Jeremy Gleason picked up the win on the mound for the Bears, going the full seven innings.

Game 2: LWC 10, SSU 8

Lindsey Wilson found their rhythm at the plate early, pushing home three runs in the first inning. Sizemore and Gabe Board led off the inning with singles before Lucas Bault walked to load the bases for Martinez.

Martinez produced a two RBI single to put runners on the corners. Chance Stayton then managed the Blue Raiders fourth single of the inning when he produced an RBI hit to right center field.

The Blue Raiders tacked on a fourth run in the second inning after making use of Shawnee State miscues. Sizemore walked with one out before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. Board blasted a one RBI double to left center field, scoring Sizemore from second.

Lindsey Wilson produced runs for the third straight inning, pushing two more home in the third. Thorne Gray reached base on a walk with one out. He later scored when Jonathan Gallagher doubled to left field. Gallagher advanced to this on a throwing error on the play. He then scored during the next at bat on a Kyle Collin RBI single.

Shawnee State got on the board in the fourth inning with two runs on two hits.

Lindsey Wilson matched the effort in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs on three hits. With two outs in the inning, Gallagher singled and Collin doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Rayno produced a two RBI single during the next Lindsey Wilson at bat.

The Bears added three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, and later added two more in the seventh cutting the LWC lead to just three at 8-7 with two innings to play.

Lindsey Wilson tacked on one insurance in both of the final two innings as the Bears added another run in the ninth, but their comeback bid would fall short.

The Blue Raiders return to the field on Tuesday when they host Midway at Egnew Park with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. CT.
