Softball Sweeps Shawnee State on the Road

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team swept their second four-game Mid-South Conference series of the season this morning with two more wins over Shawnee State (Ohio). The Blue Raiders move to 19-5 on the season and 12-2 in the MSC to sit in second place of the conference standings.

Lindsey Wilson took game one 11-4 before claiming the second contest by a final of 6-2. Lindsey Wilson claimed the first two games of the series yesterday winning 7-2 and 8-1. The wins mark the second time this season LWC has swept a conference opponent.

For the series, Makea-Al Kaluau led the offensive effort with seven hits and an even .500 batting average. Mikayla Marquez and Desiree Chang each managed six hits. Emily Boin and Olivia Franceshi each collected two wins as the pitching staff combined for a 2.00 ERA across the four games.

GAME 1: LWC 11, SSU 4

Lindsey Wilson exploded for 11 runs in the contest off 14 hits. Kylie Brown, Chang, Marquez, Kaluau, and Brianna Griffiths each recorded two hits. Griffiths led the way with three RBIs as four Blue Raiders finished with multiple RBI in the contest.

Boin (7-2) picked up the win in the center circle -- her second of the series -- going all seven innings with 10 strikeouts, allowing just six hits and four runs.

Marquez led off the game with a single before Brown drove in the game's first run with an RBI single through the hole at shortstop. The Bears took the lead in the bottom half of the inning after pushing two runs home on a two-run home run.

After two scoreless innings, Lindsey Wilson regained the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning. With runners in second and third, Brylee Pickerell produced an RBI single that scored Chang who reached on a leadoff single. Later in the inning, Griffith managed a two-RBI single that scored both Brown and Pickerell.

The Blue Raiders added to the lead with five runs in the fifth inning. Lindsey Wilson led off the inning with five straight hits to push home four runs with no outs in the inning. Griffith pushed home the final run of the inning on a single that scored Pickerell to push the LWC lead to 9-2.

Shawnee State pushed home two runs in the sixth inning but Lindsey Wilson added two runs of their own in the seventh to claim the 11-4 win.

GAME 2: LWC 6, SSU 2

Following a scoreless first inning, Lindsey Wilson broke through in the second with three runs. Back-to-back outs opening the inning, Griffiths reached base on a walk to kick off the scoring spurt. Zakiya Sizemore reached base on a single before Marquez loaded the bases with the help of a Shawnee State error.

Kaluau pushed home two runs with a two-RBI single as Marquez scored the final run of the inning after stealing home.

Lindsey Wilson pushed their advantage to four with another run in the fourth inning. Chang drove in the run on the Blue Raiders third hit of the inning with a single that scored Marquez.

The Blue Raiders added two more runs in the final inning to push their lead to six runs. Shawnee State finally got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh with two runs but their comeback bid fell short as LWC won 6-2.

Kaluau, Lexi Isable and Sizemore led with two hits in the game as Kaluau and Sizemore each collected two RBIs. Franceshi (4-0) recorded the win picking up one strikeout, allowing nine hits and just two runs.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Friday, March 25 when they welcome Tennessee Southern to Sparks Park for a four-game series that extends into Saturday.
