Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson baseball won its Mid-South Conference series opener with Thomas More (Ky.) 7-4 in up-and-down fashion today at Egnew Park.
The Blue Raiders controlled the game both offensively and on the mound for much of the game, but a disastrous inning gave the visiting Saints hope midway through the game.
Lindsey Wilson overcame the disappointing inning -- where the Blue Raiders committed a pair of errors helping Thomas More score four times -- with a three-run inning of their own in the sixth to reclaim the advantage en route to the win.
Lindsey Wilson improves to 12-5 on the season and 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference with the win. The Saints fall to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Blue Raiders scored one run in four of the first five innings to lead 4-0 at the end of five.
Coupled with Cohen Achen's dominant first five innings -- where he allowed just one hit while striking out 11 -- the Blue Raiders looked to be in cruise control.
But Thomas More rallied with four runs and three hits in the sixth inning to tie the game. Lindsey Wilson aided the Saints' comeback with a pair of errors in the inning to give Thomas More life.
As quickly as Thomas More climbed back in the game, Lindsey Wilson snatched the momentum back.
Chance Stayton led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and later scored on Andres Duran's RBI single to give the Blue Raiders a 5-4 advantage. Stayton led the Blue Raiders at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Koby Wall provided the final key hit in the game later in the inning with a two-out, two-run single to extend the lead to 7-4.
The three-run cushion was all that Cade Duncan would need.
Coming on in relief of Achen -- who improved to 4-0 on the season with the win -- Duncan hurled three scoreless innings while surrendering just one hit to pick up his first save of the season.
Achen and Duncan combined to allow just five hits while striking out 12 Saint batters in the win.
The Blue Raiders grabbed the early lead in the first inning as Michael Sizemore led off the game with a hit and Nico Martinez drove him home one batter later to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson added a second run in the second inning on a wild pitch and tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the 4-0 lead.
Duran extended Lindsey Wilson's lead to 3-0 with an RBI double chasing home Stayton -- who singled to lead off the inning. The hit and RBI are the first of the season for Duran. He concluded the day going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs in his first start of the season.
In the fifth inning, Lindsey Wilson continued the theme of scoring once an inning as Jordan Blick blasted his first home run of the season over the right-field wall to push the Blue Raider lead to 4-0.
Lindsey Wilson ended the game out-hitting the Saints 11 to five.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at noon CT on Saturday as the Blue Raiders continue their weekend series with a doubleheader with Thomas More at Egnew Park.
