Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team battled for two wins over Bethel (Tenn.) on Friday at Sparks Park.
The Blue Raiders (29-11, 20-8 MSC) won the first game of the series on a 9-5 result before turning around in game two, needing three runs in the 10th inning to pull out the sweep.
Emily Boin picked up both wins in the center circle for LWC after getting the start in game one and coming on in relief in game two. Elizabeth Funk proved to be the hero of game two with a walk-off three-RBI triple.
GAME 1: LWC 9, BU 5
Headed to the bottom of the sixth inning, Lindsey Wilson trailed by one run at 5-4. The Blue Raiders exploded for five runs in the inning to take the lead for good.
Ellie Derrick and Lexi Isable opened the inning with walks to put runners on first and second. Brianna Griffiths stepped up and smashed a three-run home run over the left-center field fence. Mikayla Marquez and Zikiya Sizemore later scored when Desiree Chang produced a two-RBI single up the middle.
Bethel regained the lead from LWC three times in the contest but failed to do so in the seventh inning as LWC picked up the win.
Lindsey Wilson made use of the long ball in game one as Makea-Al Kaluau, Alexis Garayzar, and Griffiths each hit balls over the fence. Garayzar managed a solo shot in the second inning to score the first run of the game.
Derrick then singled up the middle before an Isable walk put runners at first and second. Zakiya Sizemore then smashed a double that scored Derrick and the inning's final run.
Bethel quickly leveled the score in the third making use of two hits and a costly Lindsey Wilson error that extended the inning and allowed two runs to cross home. The Wildcats took the lead during the fifth inning as they pushed another run home on two more hits.
Lindsey Wilson managed their second two-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth. With one out Marquez doubled to deep left-center field off the wall. Kaluau managed her seventh home run of the season to push LWC into the lead at 4-3.
The home run is the 46th of her career and ties the program record.
Bethel didn't shy away, responding for the third time to the Blue Raiders runs. The Wildcats made use of a two-run home run to regain the lead in the sixth.
Boin picked up her 13th win of the season pitching six innings. She struck out eight while allowing seven hits. Marquez, Kaluau, and Derrick each led the team with two hits.
GAME 2: LWC 10, BU 9 (10 Innings)
Lindsey Wilson allowed two runs to score in the top of the tenth inning to trail 9-7. With the international tiebreaker in effect, the Blue Raiders managed to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning.
Funk came on as a pinch hitter to produce the three-RBI triple to erase their deficit and secure the walk-off winner. Funk drove her ball deep off the left-field fence, nearly clearing the wall for a grand slam.
Lindsey Wilson put runners on third base in the seventh and eighth innings but failed both times to push the winning run home.
Just like the first game, Garayzar pushed home the first runs of the contest. With Marquez, Kaluau, and Chang all reaching base on singles to load the bases, Garayzar blasted a grand slam over the left-center field fence.
Bethel challenged the Blue Raiders, trimming their deficit to just one run with three runs spread over the second and third. The Wildcats loaded the bases in the second with three straight hits to score one run while adding another hit in the third, pushing home two runs.
Lindsey Wilson added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to put themselves in control at 7-3. Bethel had other plans, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to level the score. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases in the seventh, producing a great scoring chance, but Bethel got out of the jam to force extra innings.
The Blue Raiders close out the series tomorrow a Noon CT. Senior day festivities will take place before first pitch.
