Softball Splits Doubleheader With Phoenix

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team split their doubleheader with Cumberland (Tenn.) in road Mid-South Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: LWC 7, CU 0

Lindsey Wilson pulled out their first win of the series as the Blue Raiders scored seven runs on nine hits while Emily Boin recorded the win, striking out six across seven innings of play and 22 batters faced, allowing the Phoenix only one hit in the game.

Zakiya Sizemore proved to be the difference-maker in the game for Lindsey Wilson as she was responsible for opening the scoring after a three-RBI triple made it 3-0 in the second. Mikayla Marquez added another hit later in the inning as her RBI single made it a 4-0 lead for Lindsey Wilson.

Marquez got her second RBI of the game after her single in the fourth scored another run while Makea-Al Kaluau added the two final runs later in the inning with her two-RBI double.

GAME 2: LWC 9, CU 10

Despite their 18 hits in game two, Lindsey Wilson struggled as a combined nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings from the Phoenix were enough for the home side to hold onto a one-run ball game.

While the hosts opened the scoring in the second, the Blue Raiders recovered the lead in the third after Kaluau scored on an error to tie and an RBI single from Elizabeth Funk put Lindsey Wilson back on top at 2-1.

It all fell apart in the fourth for Olivia Franceschi, who got the start from the circle for game two, as the Phoenix racked up seven runs on five hits for the 8-3 lead. The Phoenix added two more in the fifth before the Blue Raiders responded in the sixth as they put up six runs on four hits to cut the lead to 9-10.

The comeback started with an RBI single from both Kylie Brown and Alexus Garza before Brooklyn Ott was walked with the bases loaded. Sizemore added another RBI single to her game followed by an RBI single from Marquez. Despite their best efforts, the Blue Raiders ran out of runs and opportunities as the Phoenix rallied to get the final three outs in the seventh and held onto a 10-9 win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT to conclude the series.
