Softball Drops out of NAIA Opening Round with Second Loss

MARION, Ind. – The Lindsey Wilson softball season came to a close on Tuesday afternoon after the Blue Raiders recorded their second straight loss at the NAIA Opening Round – Marion Indiana Bracket. The second-seeded Blue Raiders fell to No. 4 Olivet Nazarene 11-7 this afternoon.

Lindsey Wilson struggled defensively in the game, coughing up a season-high five errors. LWC was also outhit in the contest allowing nine hits while only producing seven of their own.

Ellie Derrick and Alexis Garayzar both went 2-for-3 at the plate with Derrick managing a two-run home run. Kaylee Covey (2-3) recorded the loss for Lindsey Wilson in the center circle.

Olivet Nazarene and Lindsey Wilson each managed runs in the first inning. Both teams used similar at-bats to score in their half inning as both team's leadoff batters reached on a walk before being driven in with two outs. Garayzar drove in Desiree Chang with a single up the middle.

The Tigers added a run in the second inning, but the Blue Raiders exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lexi Isable opened the inning with a walk before three straight singles by Zakiya Sizemore, Chang, and Mikayla Marquez resulted in two runs as Marquez's single through the right side scored two. Later, a passed ball allowed Chang to score before Marquez crossed home on a Makea Al-Kaluau groundout.

Lindsey Wilson pushed their lead to five in the third inning thanks to a Derrick two-run blast. Her hit sailed deep over the left-field fence and scored Garayzar who reached on a walk. The play was the final runs of the game for Lindsey Wilson.

Olivet Nazarene responded in the fourth inning, pushing home five runs on three hits. The Blue Raider's aided the Tiger scoring spurt with three errors in the inning, leveling the score at seven. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas, scoring four more runs in the following inning thanks to a grand slam from Megan Mann. The scoring surge gave the Tigers an 11-7 lead which held the rest of the way.

The Blue Raiders finish their season with a 38-17 overall record.
