Softball Defeats Campbellsville; Fall to Freed-Hardeman in MSC Championship Final

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The No. 3-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team fell to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament finals 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. The loss marked the second time in the tournament the Blue Raiders were shut out by the Lions as the Blue Raiders only losses came against the top-seeded and No. 3-ranked NAIA program.

The Blue Raiders kicked off the day with a come from behind 11-5 win over Campbellsville (Ky.). The win was the second for the Blue Raiders over Campbellsville as they defeated the Tigers 7-1 earlier in the double-elimination tournament.

Lindsey Wilson earns one of the MSC's automatic qualifying bids into the NAIA National Championship opening round on May 16-18 at campus sites around the country. The Blue Raiders will learn their destination for the opening round on Tuesday, May 10th, when the national office releases the official participants.

Game 1: LWC 11, CU 5

Trailing 5-1 entering the fourth inning it was all Blue Raiders the rest of the way, outscoring the Tigers 10-0 over the final four innings. The Tigers opened fast, scoring four runs in the first inning and another in the second to push the pace early.

Lindsey Wilson settled into the game in the fourth inning as they pushed home three runs before tying the contest in the fifth with another run.

Three straight Blue Raiders reached base to open the fourth inning as Ellie Derrick was hit by a pitch and Lexi Isable singled up the middle. Brianna Griffiths then doubled off the left-field wall to drive in Derrick. With one out in the inning, Desiree Chang singled to drive in Isable before Mikayla Marquez drove in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly.

With runners on second and third in the fifth inning, pinch hitter Elizabeth Funk drove in the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch-runner Jordan Balz.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Lindsey Wilson exploded for six runs and a commanding 11-5 lead in the seventh inning. With two out in the inning and runners on second and third, pinch hitter Brooklynn Ott broke the tie with an RBI single through the right side that scored Sam Sims.

Makea-Al Kaluau then reached base on an error as a wild throw from the Tigers shortstop allowed two more runs to cross home. Kylie Brown later reached base on a single before Alexis Garayzar sent a three-run blast deep over the left-center field fence for the game's final runs.

Lindsey Wilson's pitching efforts were by the committee during the game as Olivia Franceschi, Sadie Werner, and Emily Boin all saw action. Boin picked up the win, pitching the final 3-1/3 innings with one strikeout, allowing one hit across 11 batters.

Despite entering the final inning tied at five, Lindsey Wilson outhit their counterparts 16-4 for the contest. Early walks and timely hitting by the Tigers over the opening two innings accounted for all of their runs.

Game 2: LWC 0, FHU 7

Lindsey Wilson fell in the championship game to Freed-Hardeman after allowing the Lions to score two runs in the third and five in the fourth. The Lions pitching duo of Chloe Winters and Brittney Adair, both boasting a sub 1.0 ERA on the season, proved to be too much for the Blue Raider bats.

Freed-Hardeman outhit Lindsey Wilson 9-5 for the contest as LWC left 11 runners stranded on base. Lindsey Wilson threatened late in the action, loading the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings but failed to score any runs.

Brown recorded two hits as a trio of Blue Raiders each collected one. Werner recorded the loss for LWC pitching three innings while allowing six hits and six runs and punching out three.

Lindsey Wilson now awaits their NAIA Opening Round host site which is scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
