Volleyball Hosts Cumberland; Pink Out on Tuesday

10/21/2024 4:35:00 PM

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Following a 24-day absence, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team returns home on Tuesday to host Cumberland (Tenn.) in the annual "Pink Out" game.

The Blue Raiders opened their 10-game spread between home matches on October 1 in Lebanon, Tennessee against the Phoenix, collecting a four-set win for their third consecutive triumph in the head-to-head series. All four sets of that match were determined by three points or fewer as the hosts outhit Lindsey Wilson .222 to .188 but fell to costly errors down the stretch that allowed the Blue Raiders to sneak ahead. The visitors also got help from 16 service aces, which at the time, was their highest output of the season.

Since that meeting, Lindsey Wilson is 5-4 but remains perfect in the Mid-South Conference. Three of the four losses during that timeframe were handed by teams receiving votes or better in the national coaches poll.

Meanwhile, Cumberland has played only four matches in the last two weeks, including three league contests where the Phoenix won one. Junior Hazel Konkel is hitting .348 with 61 kills in conference play this season. She is the only player in the Mid-South to boast top-five rankings in both total kills and total blocks. In five career matches versus Lindsey Wilson, Konkel has 51 kills, 18 blocks, and a .396 attack percentage.

The Blue Raiders are fresh off another exciting five-set win over Campbellsville (Ky.) last Thursday. Reigning Mid-South Attacker of the Week Elisa Burzio sports a team-best 98 kills and 78 digs in league play and is up to six double-doubles on the year, including one against Cumberland.

Brenda Arango is an additional Blue Raider to keep an eye on. Over the last six matches, the senior leads the team with 20 total blocks and has produced the fourth-most kills while hitting .276.

Live coverage of Tuesday's action begins on the Lindsey Wilson Sports Network at 5 p.m. CST as the junior varsity squad take on the Phoenix, followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m. CST.
