WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team secured its 18th Mid-South Conference regular season championship on Saturday after sweeping No. 19 Cumberlands (Ky.) 4-0 at the UC Tennis Complex.
Heyka Rodriguez delivered the clinch win for the Blue Raiders on court six.
Lindsey Wilson (14-2, 6-0 MSC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. The No. 2-ranked pair of Anastasiia Vorobiova and Rodriguez earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 15-ranked duo of Aina Domingo Bernabeu and Mariangeles Mateu matched the score on court three. Court two went unfinished with the Blue Raiders trailing slightly.
In singles play, the Blue Raiders extended their lead to 2-0 with No. 28-ranked Mateu's commanding 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Lindsey Wilson then picked up its third point when No. 16 Domingo Bernabeu defeated No. 25 Karen Kondo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at the top singles spot, marking a ranked win for the Blue Raiders.
The match was clinched on court six, where Rodriguez battled back from a set down to defeat Victoria Zarate 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and seal the 4-0 win and the program's 18th regular season conference title. The remaining singles matches were left unfinished following the clinch, including No. 15 Vorobiova's match at No. 2 singles against No. 23 Marina Nagai.
With the victory, Lindsey Wilson completes a perfect run through MSC regular season play and wins the title for fifth consecutive year.
The Blue Raiders return to action on Wednesday, April 23, for the start of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
