COLUMBIA, Ky. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tabbed four Lindsey Wilson student-athletes as 2026 UTR NAIA Women's Tennis All-Americans.
The near handful of honorees ties 2017 for the program's most single-season recipients.
Lindsey Wilson's All-American quartet aided the Blue Raiders to a runner-up finish in the NAIA National Tournament, as well as Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament championships.
First-Team selection
Mayra Gisone, a senior from Santa Fe, Argentina, went 16-4 in singles. She picked up four wins over nationally ranked opponents, including a three-set defeat of Tennessee Wesleyan's Ruslana Kovalenko -- No. 36 -- in the national semifinals, and an upset of Marian's (Ind.) Yasmin Imamniyazova -- No. 14 -- on March 23. Gisone surged to No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's individual rankings and won a dozen of her matches by straight sets.
In doubles, Gisone and teammate
Martina Cortal dominated their competition en route to an 18-0 record. The pair earned two wins against ranked opponents and went 2-0 in the national tournament.
Cortal, a Second-Team honoree from Barcelona, Spain, compiled a 10-7 singles record in her senior season. Her biggest win came on March 20 over McPherson's Taimi Nashiku -- No. 43. She also clinched the Mid-South tournament title with a sweep of Cumberlands' (Ky.) Bryndis Rosa at No. 2 singles.
Javiera Verdugo, another Second-Team selection from Paine, Chile, capped her freshman campaign at 15-1 in singles. She topped Tennessee Wesleyan's Ivey Prat -- No. 15 -- in Lindsey Wilson's national semifinal victory and improved to No. 12 in the ITA rankings. Verdugo's first 10 wins all came by means of straight set decisions. She also added two more such results in the national tournament as she finished 3-1 in Mobile. Verdugo and teammate
Heyka Rodriguez went 17-2 in doubles, collecting seven ranked wins along the way. Verdugo was voted Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year.
Lindsey Wilson's fourth All-American,
Mariangeles Mateu, a junior from Valencia, Spain, garners her third career NAIA All-America award. She joins Candela Castanon, Fadzai Mawisire, and Trina Slapeka as the program's only players with three or more All-America selections. Mateu posted a 14-4 record in singles competition and won three matches against nationally ranked opponents. Two of those results were recorded in the national tournament and both of which were decided by a seven-point tie-breaker in the third set. Mateu won both of her conference tournament bouts and finished 15-2 in doubles alongside teammates
Blanca Trillo Pita da Veiga and
Antonina Butrova.
