CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Campbellsville in the "Battle of Highway 55" on Wednesday at Findley Stadium.
Lindsey Wilson (3-4-1, 2-0 Mid-South Conference) took 14 shots, while the (RV) Tigers (5-6, 1-1 MSC) had nine. The Blue Raiders put seven shots on goal, and the Tigers had six.
Both teams started the first half feeling each other out. In the 10th minute, the Blue Raiders nearly struck first when Alexandra Giusti's shot hit the top of the crossbar. About seven minutes later, in the 17th minute, Lindsey Cox created another chance, but her shot was blocked. They answered with pressure of their own in the 22nd minute, when Sandra Steen fired a shot that went wide right. After trading these opportunities and controlling possession, the first half ended scoreless. In the first half each team took five shots while the Tigers had four on goal and the Blue Raiders had two.
In the second half, the Blue Raiders were the first to attempt a shot when Amanda Parreiras fired in the 50th minute, but Tigers goalkeeper Ameie Matheis made the save. Campbellsville countered as Molly Metcalfe found space in the 62nd minute and took a shot, but it sailed wide, keeping the match scoreless. The breakthrough finally came in the 77th minute when Leonie Schmid netted her first goal of the season to put the Blue Raiders ahead 1-0.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action Wednesday October 1 at 5 p.m. CT to take on MSC opponent No.14 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
