ROME, Ga. – The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team defeated Georgia Gwinnett 4-0 in the first round of the ITA NAIA Indoor National Championships on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center.
The win was the first-ever victory for Lindsey Wilson over Georgia Gwinnett. With the victory, the Blue Raiders advance to Saturday's semifinals at 4:30 p.m. CT. Lindsey Wilson will take on the No. 6 seed Southeastern (Fla.) for a spot in the finals. Southeastern defeated third-seeded William Carey (Miss.) 4-1 on Friday.
Georgia Gwinnett forfeited No. 3 doubles.
Heyka Rodriguez and
Javiera Verdugo defeated Nicoleta Anestiadi and Marylove Edwards 6-3 in the top-seeded doubles match.
Mayra Gisone and
Martina Cortal were leading 5-3 at No. 2 doubles before the point was clinched.
The Blue Raiders got out to a 2-0 lead after a Grizzly forfeit at No. 6 singles.
Blanca Trillo Pita da Veiga increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Toluwani Akosile at No. 5 singles. Verdugo clinched the match for the Blue Raiders with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anestiadi at No. 4 singles.
Lindsey Wilson faces off with Southeastern in the semifinals on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Rome Tennis Center.
