Box Score GLASGOW, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis team won the program's first-ever NAIA Region XI Championship today defeating Freed-Hardeman University 5-3 at Gorin Park.
Lindsey Wilson receives the automatic bid into the 26th Annual NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship that will be held May 15-19 in Mobile, Alabama.
The top-seeded and No. 6-ranked Blue Raiders grabbed the early advantage, winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.
Lindsey Wilson No. 2 doubles team of Natalia Yakimovich and Fadzai Mawisire easily defeated Freed-Hardeman's Marie-France Lord-Andrade and Dasha Halyanova 8-2 to take the 1-0 lead. Freed quickly evened the match as the No. 3 doubles team of Petra Kostelnikova and Roxana Alt defeated Lindsey Wilson's Zuzana Rakyta and
Marla Rogers 8-1.
In the final doubles match, Lindsey Wilson's
Candela Castanon and
Florencia Bertoletti slipped by Freed's Ayda Ardila and Natalia Yanes 9-7 at the No. 1 doubles position to take the advantage into singles.
In the singles, Yanes evened the match at 2-2 with a decisive 6-1, 6-4 win over Bertoletti at No. 4 singles. Mawisire gave Lindsey Wilson the one point advantage just minutes later with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Halyanova at No. 3 singles.
Yakimovich erased a one set deficit to beat Ardila 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-2 lead.
Freed-Hardeman cut the Blue Raiders' lead to 4-3 following Alt's 6-0, 6-1 win over Rogers at No. 6 singles.
Castanon ended the Lady Lions' comeback hopes as the top-seed came from one set down to defeat Lord-Andrade 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the decisive match.
Second-seeded and No. 8-ranked Freed-Hardeman should receive one of the at-large bids into the national championship based on its national ranking. The Lady Lions will learn their fate on May 10.
