COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team fell in double overtime to Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University 1-0 today at Lindsey Wilson Park.
In a battle of top-five, undefeated teams, the No. 4-ranked visiting Cougars dominated much of the play throughout the match to hand the No. 5-ranked Blue Raiders their first loss of the season. Lindsey Wilson falls to 5-1 on the season.
Azusa senior Swen Simon scored with 2:38 remaining in double overtime to help the Cougars improve to 6-0 on the season.
Simon beat Lindsey Wilson junior goalkeeper Glen Fox from deep inside the penalty area after out-running the Blue Raider defense after Azusa junior Ryan Cheek served a ball from the right flank.
Simon's flick over a charging Fox gave the Cougars the win.
Azusa controlled much of the play in the first 45 minutes, out-shooting the Blue Raiders 10-2. Fox turned away all four Azusa shots on goal to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Following a scoreless second half, Simon appeared to send the Cougars home with the win in the first overtime with a blast from 12 yards out. But, Fox saved the matched with a diving fingertip save to send the match into the second overtime period. Fox finished the day with nine saves.
The Blue Raiders had a pair of chances in the second overtime with two shots at Azusa junior goalkeeper James Crawford. Crawford -- who ended with five saves -- turned away both shots.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, September 18, as the Blue Raiders host Mid-South Conference foe Pikeville (Ky.) College at Lindsey Wilson Park.
