COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team needed a late goal to defeat Georgetown (Ky.) College tonight at Walter S. Rueling Stadium.
Before the men's game Lindsey Wilson Park was re-named to Walter S. Rueling Stadium in dedication to the school's seventh president.
Rueling was instrumental in the growth of the soccer program at Lindsey Wilson. The current field was constructed during his presidency.
Lindsey Wilson stormed out the gates scoring two goals in the first 23 minutes.
Junior defender Shaun Francis rocketed a shot from 20 yards out into the bottom right corner for Lindsey Wilson's first goal.
In the 22nd minute freshman forward Moses Aduny scored his team leading 10th goal of the season giving the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Georgetown would not go away quietly. In the 28th minute senior forward Alex Butt headed in a corner kick off the foot of senior midfielder Josh Johnson. The goal cut Lindsey Wilson's lead in half, 2-1.
Johnson was at it again in the 46th minute. He kicked another corner kick right on net and this time junior midfielder Javier Rondon headed it past freshman goalkeeper Michael Smith.
The game was tied 2-2 entering the half.
Georgetown freshman goalkeeper Nick Hoffman kept the game knotted at two for the next 38 minutes with five second half saves. He recorded nine saves on the night.
Finally, in the 83rd minute the Blue Raiders got one past Hoffman. Junior defender Shaun Francis scored his second goal of the night off of a beautiful pass from Aduny. The goal gave Lindsey Wilson the lead and eventual 3-2 victory.
Smith had his shutout streak broken in the 28th minute of tonight's game. The streak, which lasted over the course of nine games ended at 643 minutes and 58 seconds.
The Blue Raiders now stand at 13-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Mid-South Conference.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 1 as the Blue Raiders host Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) in its home finale at Walter S. Rueling Stadium.
