FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior forward Carnell Learmond's goal in the 23rd minute proved to be the game winner for the No. 1-seed Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team in its 2-0 win against Bellevue (Neb.) University in the second round of the NAIA National Championship on Monday at Ramirez Field.
After a string of four missed opportunities to start the game, Learmond put the Blue Raiders up 1-0 with a strong finish inside the right side of the box.
Sophomore defender Michael Azira gave Learmond a long pass that he handled calmly, switching feet just five feet from the goal to set up a clean strike past the keeper.
Bellevue goalkeeper Sebastian Narvaez kept busy in the first half. While credited with just two saves, the number didn't paint a true picture of how many balls came his way as Lindsey Wilson finished the half with nine shots.
Narvaez, who had given up just 12 goals all season, nearly faced a deficit in the 10th minute.
Freshman midfielder Lebogang Moloto took a pass from Learmond inside the box with just the keeper to beat. Narvaez, however, made the right read for a diving stop.
The 1-0 Blue Raider lead held up the rest of the game as Bellevue never presented a serious threat. Although that didn't stop Moloto from seizing an opportunity for redemption on his missed chance.
Moloto made up for his first-half miss with the Blue Raider's second goal in the 85th minute. Freshman forward Chris Ochieng set up the score with a pass that Moloto touched for a floater that sailed over Narvaez's head from the right side of the field.
Lindsey Wilson held a large advantage in shots for the game (19-4), including a 6-0 margin in shots on goal. Blue Raider freshman keeper Callum Christie finished the game with no saves, while Narvaez collected four.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 9 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Dec. 2 against the winner of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) University and Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) University in Fresno, Calif., at Ramirez Field.
