FRESNO, Calif. -- After a Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College goal slipped by Lindsey Wilson College off a free kick in the first half, the Blue Raiders accepted the challenge to the tune of a 2-0 win on Wednesday in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals at Ramirez Field.
Lindsey Wilson was clearly the aggressor on offense in the first half, leading in shots 10-1. Martin Methodist, however, took advantage of its one free kick with a header from Andrew Gordon to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders had a bevy of opportunities to tie near the goal as sophomore defender Chris Williams missed a pair of shots from inside the box and freshman forward Chris Ochieng had his attempt from the center of the box stopped by the keeper.
While first-half heroics belonged to the Redhawks, Lindsey Wilson took over in the second half.
Junior forward Carnell Learmond jumpstarted the Blue Raider offense with a goal in the 51st minute to tie the game. Freshman defender Marco Vogeli set up the shot from the left side of the box with a deep pass down the right side of the field for the assist.
Twenty-five minutes later, Ochieng gave Lindsey Wilson the lead (2-1) with an unassisted goal from the center of the box.
The Blue Raiders controlled the possessions the rest of the way to hold on to its one-goal advantage.
Lindsey Wilson freshman keeper Callum Christie finished the game having to make just one save, while Martin Methodist's James Coleman collected seven on the night. The Blue Raiders led in shots 23-4, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Lindsey Wilson advances to the national semifinals at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 4 against Simon Fraser (B.C.) University at Ramirez Field.
