COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer opened its 2009 season with a 3-0 shutout of St. Xavier (Ill.) University Saturday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium. Sophomores Moses Aduny and Samuel Asante and freshman Tom Davies scored for the Blue Raiders.
Asante took a pass from freshman Chris Ochieng that he rocketed past St. Xavier (0-1-0) goalkeeper Ian Pickett to put No. 6 Lindsey Wilson (1-0-0) up 1-0 in the 14th minute. The goal that Asante shot in from just outside the box would be the only score for either team in the first period.
LWC played the role of aggressor for the entire first half of the match, leading the Cougars in shots 10-1.
The Blue Raiders began to pull away in the 53rd minute when Aduny gave them a 2-0 lead on a blast from the right corner of the box. Then with just over four minutes left in the game, Davies converted a breakaway counter to put St. Xavier out of reach, 3-0.
For the game, Lindsey Wilson led St. Xavier in shots 15-5. The Blue Raiders' keepers were rarely threatened as junior Pedro Caetano and freshman Callum Christie finished the contest without a save.
The Blue Raiders return to the field at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 28 against Lindenwood (Mo.) University at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
