MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Lindsey Wilson College sophomore Joe Tait played beat the clock tonight, scoring a golden goal with 33 seconds left in the second overtime to send the Blue Raiders to a 2-1 double overtime win over host Bethel (Ind.) College.
The Pilots (4-6-0) provided a stern test for the No. 11-ranked Blue Raiders before Tait scored the game-winner in the game's 120th minute. The goal was Tait's third and first game-winning goal of the season.
Bethel wasted little time before taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Romulo Nobrega netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from Daniel Moyo in the game's fourth minute.
The Nobrega shot was exactly half of the Pilots' shot total in the first half compared to seven strikes from the Blue Raiders (6-1-1) in the opening frame. Bethel goalkeeper Cody Troyer was equal to the task stopping all five Lindsey Wilson shots on target.
Bethel led 1-0 at the half.
Tait tied the match at 1-1 in the 57th minute with a goal off junior Michael Azira's first assist and point of the season.
The match remained tied through regulation and the opening 10-minute overtime before the Tait's game-winner in the second overtime. The overtime win is the second straight for the Blue Raiders beyond regulation play. Lindsey Wilson beat William Carey (Miss.) University 4-3 in overtime last Saturday in Decatur, Ala.
The Blue Raiders concluded the match out-shooting the Pilots 18-10, including 11-7 in shots on goal. Troyer ended the night with eight saves, while Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Pedro Caetano finished with four saves in a winning effort between the pipes.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Sept. 28, as the Blue Raiders host MSC foe University of the Cumberlands at Walter S. Rueling Stadium.
