After Surprising Start, No. 2 Men's Soccer Tops West Virginia Tech 3-1

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- A West Virginia University Institute of Technology goal in the first minute got things off to a surprising start, but it was the only score the Golden Bears could manage all game as the second ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team put together a 3-1 win on Sunday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Just 20 seconds into the game, West Virginia Tech got on top with a shocking goal from near midfield by Jonathan Day.

Noticing Blue Raider freshman goalkeeper Yuta Nomura pulled 20 feet out of the goal, Day sent a rocket in the direction of the goal that found its way in despite the heavy winds on the pitch.

After falling behind early 1-0, the Blue Raiders got even just seven minutes later as freshman Philip Sandgren took a cross from senior Moses Aduny inside the box and finished it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

Some 30 minutes later, a Golden Bear penalty in the box helped Lindsey Wilson go on top with a free kick by Williams that he buried into the back of the net to give the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead just seven minutes before halftime.

Coming out of the break, Lindsey Wilson took 11 minutes to strike again as senior Samuel Asante took a perfect cross from his classmate Aduny on the right side of the box and finished the score in the 56th minute.

The third goal provided enough of a cushion for Lindsey Wilson to finish off the win as neither team scored again the rest of the way.

Lindsey Wilson's offensive advantage was a large one, leading the contest in shots 19-3 and shots on goal 6-1.

Nomura played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Raiders, finishing without a save and just the one goal allowed. John Dunn went the distance for West Virginia Tech as well, collecting three saves and allowing all three Blue Raider scores.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against the University of Pikeville (Ky.) at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
