Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- After taking a 2-1 lead after doubles' play, the Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis team lost four of six singles' matches to lose to 21st ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University 5-4 on Wednesday at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
Tied at 4-4, the entire match came down to the No. 5 singles' match between Tiger freshman Kristen Hamrick and Blue Raider newcomer Rocio Cardo. Cardo -- who was 3-3 coming into the match -- got behind early and never recovered as Hamrick clinched the match for Campbellsville with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Sophomore Laura Vergara picked up a win at No. 3 singles for the Blue Raiders after her opponent, freshman Gleidys Salazar retired in the second set with a knee injury.
The only other singles' win for Lindsey Wilson (8-5, 2-1 MSC) didn't come easily as junior Trina Slapeka escaped a third set, topping freshman Tanya Murtagh 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
Sophomore Slavica Milanovic took a tough loss for Lindsey Wilson after entering the match with a 9-3 record at the second seed. Campbellsville (10-4, 2-0 MSC) sophomore Anita Henestrosa earned the win in three sets, 1-6, 6-4 and 6-0.
Troubles continued for Lindsey Wilson at the fourth seed where sophomore Edelmira Ferri lost to freshman Aspen Edwards 6-4, 6-4, while Blue Raider sophomore Ashley Phillips took a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the sixth seed to junior Stacey Drew.
Doubles is where Lindsey Wilson did most of its damage, earning hard-fought wins at the first and second seeds.
Slapeka and Milanovic won at the top seed 8-4 against Murtagh and Henestrosa, while Vergara and Cardo took an 8-2 win against Salazar and Edwards. Ferri and Phillips lost at the third seed 8-4 against Hamrick and Drew.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Noon CT on Saturday, April 16 against University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
