No. 14 Women's Tennis Edged by Western Kentucky 5-4

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Losses at the top-two spots in both singles and doubles play proved the difference on Saturday as Western Kentucky edged the 14th ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis team at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.

The Hilltoppers gave up forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 singles, but were too strong at the top of the lineup to give up the loss to the Blue Raiders.

Western Kentucky closed doubles play up 3-0 after Monta Reinfelde and Maddie Phillips topped Trina Slapeka and Slavica Milanovic 8-4 at No.1 and Carolina Barboza and Alex Crofford were 8-6 winners over Diana Gerlakh and Laura Vergara at No. 2.

Lindsey Wilson's skid continued briefly in singles as the top-seeded Slapeka lost to Reinfelde 6-1, 6-2 and Gerlakh lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 against Barboza.

The Blue Raiders won at No. 3 with Milanovic topping Crofford 6-3, 6-1 and at No. 4 with Vergara beating Phillips 7-5, 6-1.

The clinching loss was at No. 5 as Anna Gaprindashvili lost to Morgan Freeman 6-2, 6-3.

"We really didn't play well all around," said Blue Raider head coach Daniel Finn. "We missed way too many opportunities to get into the match, even though we were not playing well. We will get back to work on those issues and get ready for Pikeville."

Lindsey Wilson is back in action at 2 p.m. CT on Feb. 25 against the University of Pikeville (Ky.) at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
