Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Both the No. 14 Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis team's season and first-year head coach Daniel Finn's career got off to a good start on Saturday as the Blue Raiders topped Bellarmine (Ky.) 6-3.
"We really didn't play our best today, but I am extremely proud of how we found a way to beat a good team," said Finn.
The Knights are ranked 10th in the NCAA Div. II Midwest Region and featured Rebecca Porter at the top seed who is ranked eighth in the region.
Lindsey Wilson's own ranked top-seed Trina Slapeka -- No. 3 in the NAIA – made quick work of Porter however, winning 6-3, 6-2. Blue Raider newcomer Diana Gerlakh made sure the Blue Raiders were dominant in the top-two spots as she beat Jamie Claeys 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
Bellarmine picked two of its three points in the middle of the singles' chart.
Third-seeded Evann Waschuk topped Slavica Milanovic 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in the hardest fought match of the day, while the Knights' Emily Roebker was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Laura Vergara at No. 4.
Lindsey Wilson regained control of the match at the final two singles' spots as Anna Gaprindashvili won 6-4, 6-4 over Abby Dorton at No. 5 and Rocio Cardo outlasted Keyly Knechtel 6-2, 7-6 (3) at the bottom of the order.
Gaprindashvili's point at No. 5 was the deciding match of the day, while Lindsey Wilson put together a 2-1 advantage in doubles' play.
Slapeka and Milanovic teamed at No. 1 for the Blue Raiders to beat Porter and Waschuk 8-5 and Gerlakh and Vergara won 9-7 against Claeys and Roebker as the second seed.
The Blue Raiders' lone doubles' loss was at No. 3 as Gaprindashvili and Cardo lost 8-5 against Hannah Hagan and Kelly ollHollingsworth of Bellarmine.
Lindsey Wilson is back on the courts at 1 p.m. CT on Feb. 15 at Morehead State (Ky.) University in Morehead, Ky.
