Women's Tennis Sweep Cumberlands for 9th Straight Win

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis met little resistance in a 9-0 sweep of host team University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) today in a Mid-South Conference match.

The win gives the Blue Raiders (10-2, 5-0 in the MSC) at least a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title with one regular season match remaining against UVa.-Wise on April 7.

Lindsey Wilson also clinches the top seed in next month's MSC Tournament with today's win.

No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson won all three doubles points but had to work in the top-seeded match.

Lindsey Wilson's Diana Gerlakh and Laura Vergara beat Shelby Muff and Lindsay Collette 8-2 while Anna Gaprindashvili and Rocio Cardo cruised to an 8-3 win over Kaitlin Smith and Kaitlin Daugherty to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead.

In the No. 1-seeded doubles match, Trina Slapeka and Slavica Milanovic -- ranked seventh in the NAIA by the ITA -- outlasted Neesha Thirumalaichelvam and Erin Hart 9-7 to claim the third point for the Blue Raiders. Slapeka and Milanovic improve to 11-1 with the win, including their ninth straight victory in doubles action.

The Blue Raiders controlled the Patriots (3-10, 1-2) in singles matches two through six as Lindsey Wilson dropped just seven games in the five matches -- all straight wins.

Milanovic -- ranked 44th in the NAIA -- claimed the decisive point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Smith to give the Blue Raiders the necessary five points for the win.

Like doubles play, the best singles match came from the top-seeded match.

Slapeka -- ranked seventh nationally -- needed three sets to dismiss No. 37-ranked Thirumalaichelvam 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the final match of the day to secure the sweep.

With the win, the Blue Raiders run their winning streak to nine straight.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Tuesday, April 3, as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 1-ranked Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) in Montgomery Ala.
