MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson men's soccer defeated No.7-seed Hastings (Neb.) College 3-1 in tonight's 2013 NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals at Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.
Lindsey Wilson (17-3-2, 8-0-1 MSC) faces the No. 11-seed Auburn (Ala.) University Montgomery on Friday in the 2013 NAIA National Semifinal at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Warhawks upset No. 3-seed Oklahoma Wesleyan 3-2 in double-overtime to reach the semifinal match.
The Blue Raiders dominated the first half taking 12 shots - four on goal - to the Broncos two shots. Lindsey Wilson capitalized early, scoring in the second minute on a deflected cross from Lwandiso Gonya that Elijah Ukpong buried in the net to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson's Gonya had a chance in the fifth minute to make it 2-0 when he broke through the defenders inside the 18-yard box but Alex Guyer came up with the save to keep it 1-0.
Guyer's yellow card in the 29th minute on a hard attack of Xavier Baumgart just outside the box provided the Blue Raiders with another opportunity to double their lead. Keletso Mosime just missed on the chance as his free kick sailed it over the crossbar keeping the game at 1-0.
Mosime made the next shot count as he juked the defender in the box and put it past a diving Guyer which went off the post and deflected in off Guyer to make it 2-0 in the 30th minute.
Hastings flipped the momentum to start the second half.
Thomas Boss led the charge first with a corner kick and later with a free kick, following a Lindsey Wilson foul, that connected with Shane Davidson for the Broncos lone goal. Davidson gathered the free kick and slipped it past Yuta Nomura to make it 2-1 in the 53rd minute.
Hastings continued to apply the pressure only to be turned away by the Lindsey Wilson defense.
Erik Berthagen made a sliding tackle in the 61st minute on Jake Ramsay to keep Hastings from getting off a point blank shot on Nomura and keep it 2-1.
Lindsey Wilson's Bastien Montagnon just mised an chance to give the Blue Raiders a cushion. Tom Moody served a ball that Montagnon headed towards the goal from seven-yards out, but Guyer was equal to the task and collected the save. Guyer ended the match with six saves.
In the waning minutes, Lindsey Wilson sealed the match with a Moody penalty kick. Montagnon drew the foul inside the penalty box that set up the Moody kick to push the Blue Raiders to a 3-1 lead in the 88th minute.
The Blue Raiders outshot the Broncos 26-9, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Mosime led all players with five shots including one goal. Moody had three shots on goal for Lindsey Wilson while Gonya finished with two shots on goal. Nomura made one save while allowing one goal on two shots.
