Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For the ninth straight season, the Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team is Mid-South Conference Tournament Champions. The top-seeded Blue Raiders (17-2) defeated second-seeded Cumberland (14-6) 5-2 today at the Boone Tennis Center to claim the title.
Lindsey Wilson earns the Mid-South's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship in May in Mobile, Ala with today's win. Cumberland must wait to see if it will receive one of the national tournament's at-large bids.
The Blue Raiders never trailed in the match after winning two of the three doubles matches.
Slavica Milanovic and Diana Gerlakh started the scoring for the Blue Raiders with an 8-0 blitzing of Tais Lacerda and Sandra Munoz in the third-seeded doubles match.
Cumberland managed to tie the match at 1-1 with a win at the top-seeded doubles match.
Angelica Sepulveda and Antea Dedic beat Anna Gaprindashvili and Sarah Bernos 8-4 for the equalizer with one doubles match still on the court.
Two weeks ago, Cumberland's Anita Rácz and Alena Gizdic defeated Gaprindashvili and Alejandra Galvis 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead after the doubles in the regular season match. Lindsey Wilson would battle back to win the match 6-3.
But today, Galvis and Laura Vergara avenged that loss at No. 2 with an 8-5 win over Rácz and Gizdic to give Lindsey Wilson the 2-1 lead heading to singles.
Galvis led off the singles run for the Blue Raiders with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win over Gizdic at No. 2 singles to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-1 advantage. Galvis improves to 12-3 on the season in singles with the win.
Gaprindashvili added another Blue Raider point with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rácz at the fourth-seeded singles match. Gaprindashvili improves to 7-0 this season in the four spot and 13-2 overall with the win.
Cumberland cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 4-2 as top-seeded Sepulveda beat Milanovic 6-4, 6-3.
Just as the fifth and sixth seeds began their matches -- the match was played in the four-court indoor facility -- Vergara secured the championship.
Vergara won the final two games over Dedic to claim the 6-2, 6-4 win and the title.
The other two matches were halted after the Blue Raiders claimed the fifth team point.
The win helped Lindsey Wilson claim its eighth sweep of the MSC regular season and tournament titles.
