No. 1-seeded Women's Soccer defeats No. 8-seeded Cumberlands, 9-0

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's soccer eliminated No. 8 seed Cumberlands (Ky.) by a 9-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Hosting a Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match, the Blue Raiders (11-3-3) challenged the visiting Patriots (1-17-0) defensive unit all day long. Lindsey Wilson fired off 44 shots, including 25 on goal, while Cumberlands finished without a single shot on-goal.

After threatening during the opening 11-plus minutes of play, the Blue Raiders capitalized in early in the 12th minute.

Following a corner kick taken by Bettina Brulhart, the ball bounced around in front of the Patriots' goal off several players. Eventually Amanda Kander gathered in the ball from the far side of the six-yard box and feed Carola Schneider with a pass. Schneider then nailed the bottom lip of the crossbar with her shot, but the ball had enough English to roll into the back of the net for a goal.

Just under 90 seconds later, Kander dribbled the ball near the top of the 18-yard and converted a mid-distance shot for an unassisted score at the 12:48 mark, giving Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 edge.

During early moments of the 33rd minute, the Blue Raiders struck again, this time following a foul against the Patriots.

The free kick by Brulhart near the top of the 18-yard box was blasted straight to Cumberlands goalkeeper Autumn Williams and was punched away for a goalkeeper save. As the ball sailed high into the air away from Williams, Lindsey Wilson's Anna Vig charged the loose ball as it returned to the ground and headed it into the goal for a 3-0 Blue Raider advantage at 32:04.

Around the end of the 40th minute and the beginning of the 41st minute, Lindsey Wilson used a rapid sequence of give-and-go passes to score again.

Brulhart and Ayaki Shinada played the ball back-and-forth to one another before Brulhart sent a pass to Shinada inside the 18-yard box. Shinada corralled the ball and sent it into the far side of the goal to make it 4-0 in favor of the Blue Raiders.

When the buzzer sounded for halftime, Lindsey Wilson held a 4-0 lead. The Blue Raiders continued to apply pressure on the Cumberlands defense in the second and final half of play, scoring five times to close out their 9-0 victory.

In the 48th minute, Emilia Jonsson sent a through pass from near the top of the 18-yard box to Brulhart on the far side of the box. Brulhart fielded Jonsson's feed and blasted it home for a 5-0 lead.

During the 54th minute, a pass by Vig from the far side of the 18-yard box ended up at Shinada's feet. Shinada then dribbled and kicked the ball into the lower part of the near side of the Patriots' goal to extend Lindsey Wilson's edge to 6-0.

Later on, Vig possessed the ball right near the far-side corner of the 18-yard box, and with her back almost to Cumberlands' goal sent a side-winding shot over Patriot goalkeeper Williams outstretched reach for a 7-0 advantage at 60:25.

In the 72nd minute, another give-and-go sequence between Brulhart and Shinada resulted in a blast sent into the left upper-90 by Shinada.

To cap the day's scoring, Elizabet Madjarac successfully converted a penalty-kick attempt following a red card against Cumberlands in the 88th minute.

Shinada scored three times for Lindsey Wilson, while Brulhart totaled a goal and three assists. Vig had a pair of goals as well as an assist.

The Blue Raider defensive unit received credit for their 10th shutout this season as Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Johanna Henriksson faced zero shots on-target.

Patriots' goalkeeper Williams made 16 saves against eight goals allowed.

The Blue Raiders move on to the MSC Tournament Semifinals on Thursday against fourth-seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) for a noontime match in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
