Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team upset second-ranked Xavier (La.) 5-4 Friday afternoon at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders (2-3) found themselves behind early after the Golden Nuggets (9-5) took a 2-1 lead following the double matches.
Anna Gaprindashvili and Alicia Rodriguez captured the first doubles point playing at the No. 2 position after defeating Carmen Nelson and Brandi Nelson 8-4.
The Gold Nuggets answered with Nour Abbes and Simone-Alyse Ewell winning 8-2 over Diana Gerlakh and Jessica King at the No. 3 position, followed by Kourtney Howell and Brion Flowers winning 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles over Alejandra Galvis and Sarah Bernos for the 2-1 match lead.
Xavier extended their lead to 3-1 after Abbes captured the first singles point when she defeated Bernos at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-1.
The Blue Raiders began the climb back into the match after Ana Helena Pinto took down Carmen Nelson at the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-0, and Rodriguez defeated Flowers 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 position to tie the match 3-3.
Lindsey Wilson took their first lead of the day after King defeated Brandi Nelson 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 at the No. 4 position for the 4-3 advantage.
The No. 2 singles match went back and forth between Howell and Galvis. Galvis won the first set 6-4 and Howell took the second set 6-2 to force a third and decisive set. The set remained close until Howell was able to pull away for the 6-4 win, earning the point and tying the overall match 4-4.
It all came down to the No. 5 singles match between Gaprindashvili and Ewell. Gaprindashvili fell in the first set 6-3 before battling back and winning the second set 6-2 to force a third set.
Gaprindashvili took an early lead in set three but Ewell battled back and tied the match at 6-6 to force a tiebreaker. Gaprindashvili held an early lead again at 3-0 in the tiebreaker but Ewell slowly chipped away and cut it to one point at 6-5 before Gaprindashvili delivered a service ace for the final point to seal the 5-4 Blue Raider upset.
The women's tennis team returns to the court on Saturday, March 22 when they head to Campbellsville for a 2 p.m. CT start with the Tigers.
