Women's Tennis falls to Southern Illinois 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team fell to NCAA Division I Southern Illinois 5-2 on Saturday at the University of Louisville Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Blue Raiders (3-4) stepped away from NAIA competition for the fourth and final time this season -- all resulting in Lindsey Wilson losses.

Playing NCAA rules with just one doubles point, Southern Illinois (12-6) captured the top two doubles matches to claim the early 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson's Jessica King and Anna Pinto beat Ariadna Cairo Baza and Polina Dozortseva 8-4 in the third seeded doubles match.

But, Southern Illinois' Natasha Tomishima and Meagan Monaghan defeated Alejandra Galvis and Sarah Bernos 8-1 in the top doubles match and Korey Love and Anita Lee beat Alicia Rodriguez and Anna Gaprindashvili 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles match to secure the point.

King and Pinto each won their singles matches for the two Lindsey Wilson points on Saturday.

King beat Dozortseva in the opening set 7-1 in a tiebreaker before Dozortseva retired in the fourth-seeded singles match.

Pinto won the sixth-seeded singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gisela Cairo Baza.

Southern Illinois won the remaining matches in straight sets to take the 5-2 win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action with a pair of matches on Sunday, March 30 at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex on the LWC campus. The Blue Raiders face Mid-South Conference foe Shawnee State (Ohio) at 11 a.m. CT and Pikeville (Ky.) at 2:30 p.m. CT.
