No. 3 Women's Tennis defeats Milligan 5-1 in NAIA's Second Round

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 3 Lindsey Wilson opened play today in the 2014 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship with a 5-1 win over Milligan (Tenn.) at the Mobile Tennis Center.

With the win, the Blue Raiders advance to the quarterfinals against No. 6 Brenau (Ga.) -- who beat Oklahoma Baptist 5-1 in another second-round match today.

Lindsey Wilson (16-4) won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead on Milligan -- who beat Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) 5-4 in Tuesday's first round. The Blue Raiders received a bye into the second round after earning one of the top-eight seeds in the 24-team tournament.

Lindsey Wilson's Alejandra Galvis and Jessica King cruised to an 8-0 win over Sarah Rainwater and Caroline Morelli at No. 2 doubles for the first point of the match. Ana Helena Pinto and Alicia Rodriguez added a second Blue Raider point as the pair defeated Celeste Carpenter and Ahmee Kelly 8-2 in the third-seeded match.

Milligan captured its first and only point of the match at No. 1 doubles as Rachel Hodas and Kayla Kelly beat Sarah Bernos and Anna Gaprindashvili 8-4.

Rodriguez tallied the first singles point of the day as she blanked Rainwater 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to push the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1. King quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Carpenter in the fourth-seeded singles match for the 4-1 overall lead.

Rodriguez improved to 12-3 on the season in singles play while King moved to 12-2 with the straight sets win. Each owns a 12-match winning streak and is unbeaten in NAIA play this season.

Gaprindashvili ran her winning streak to eight straight while providing the match-clinching point in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Morelli in the fifth-seeded singles match. Gaprindashvili moves to 11-4 on the season.

The remainder of the matches were halted after the Blue Raiders reached the five points necessary for the win.

Milligan season comes to an end with the loss. The Buffaloes finish with a 17-5 record.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the court at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday, May 15 against Brenau at the Mobile Tennis Center.
