Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – The third-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Brenau (Ga.) 5-2 on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the NAIA National Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center.
With the win, Lindsey Wilson will play in their second-consecutive national semifinals. The Blue Raiders fell in the semifinals last season to eventual national champion Auburn Montgomery (Ala.).
Lindsey Wilson (17-4) opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches for a 2-1 lead.
The doubles team of Ana Helena Pinto and Alicia Rodriguez quickly seized the first point of the day after defeating Brenau's Valeria Savina and Kelley Cohron 8-0 at the No. 3 position.
Sarah Bernos and Anna Gaprindashvili followed with an 8-4 over Dominika Jasova and Zalina Nazarova at the No. 1 position for the 2-0 lead.
Brenau (14-6) got on the scoreboard after Maria Perdomo Medina and Stephanie Moniz defeated Alejandra Galvis and Jessica King 8-4 at the No. 2 position to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
In the singles matches, Pinto defeated Cohron at the No. 6 position 6-3, 6-0, to push the lead to 3-1.
Brenau answered when Jasova took down Galvis 6-4, 6-1, at the top singles position to again trim the lead down to one point at 3-2.
But Brenau would get no closer as Rodriguez defeated Nazarova 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 singles, followed by Gaprindashvili defeating Savina at the No. 5 position 6-1, 6-1, to secure the fifth and decisive point to give the Blue Raiders the 5-2 victory.
Lindsey Wilson has now won 14 consecutive matches this season and remains undefeated against NAIA competition.
The Blue Raiders face the No. 2 seed Georgia Gwinnett on Friday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
