Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team fell to NCAA Division I member Eastern Kentucky by a 5-2 score on Friday afternoon.
Using NCAA scoring where one point is awarded for the best of three doubles matches, the Blue Raiders (1-3) were able to grab an early upper hand over the host Colonels (2-4).
At the number one doubles match, the Lindsey Wilson pairing of Alicia Rodriguez and Jessica King took down Melissa Gerritsen and Domi Hadnadova 8-2 to claim the first match of the day.
In the number two doubles match, Henar Munoz and Fiona Curty took down Eastern Kentucky's Kristina Labeja and Manuela Jimenez 8-5 to capture the all important doubles point, giving the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
But the lead would not last long as the Colonels quickly tied the match after Labeja defeated Diana Gerlakh at the No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Eastern Kentucky took the lead when Jimenez defeated Munoz by a 6-4, 6-4 margin at the No. 3 singles.
At the No. 4 singles match, Curty tried to force a tiebreaker but Gerritsen ultimately escaped with a 6-1, 7-5 victory to push the Colonels' lead to 3-1.
Eastern Kentucky captured the decisive point at the No. 1 singles match when Amandine Faouzi held on for a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over Rodriguez to make it 4-1.
King was the lone Blue Raider to win a singles match, defeating Hadnadova 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles. Ana Helena Pinto fell 6-3, 6-2 in the final singles match to Marina Marti, bringing the final score to 5-2 in favor of the Colonels.
"This was a very hard fought match the whole way," Lindsey Wilson tennis coach Daniel Finn said. "When you knock someone down, you have to be ready when they get back up and today we were not quite ready when it happened."
"You have to give credit to Eastern Kentucky; they did not back down when we came at them" Finn said. "We have to continue to work hard and play the big points better."
Next up for the Blue Raiders is the home opener on Feb. 28 as Lindsey Wilson hosts Austin Peay State (Tenn.) at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
