Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team fell 5-2 on Saturday to NCAA Division I opponent Western Kentucky at the WKU Tennis Complex.

Using NCAA rules where two out of three doubles victories are required to earn the lone doubles point, the Blue Raiders (7-4) fell to the Hilltoppers (9-4) in a hard-fought battle after the final doubles match went to a tiebreaker.

Western Kentucky's Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita swept the top doubles match over Henar Munoz and Natalia Kattah 6-0. The Blue Raiders responded with a 6-3 victory at the third-seeded doubles flight by Alex Shchipakina and Maria Prados Cid over Gabby Crofford and Cassie Pennington, making the No. 2 doubles flight the decisive match.

In the final doubles matchup, Lindsey Wilson's Jessica King and Fiona Curty took on Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou. After a back-and-forth battle, the match went into a tiebreaker where the Hilltopper duo was finally able to edge the Blue Raiders 7-3 to secure a 7-6 match victory, and the lone doubles point for Western Kentucky.

In singles play, Curty quickly evened the overall team scores after winning 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position to make it 1-1.

But then Western Kentucky responded in a big way, winning the next four singles point to mathematically secure the victory. The fourth and decisive team point for the Hilltoppers came when Shchipakina fell 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles flight to Hejlova.

Prados Cid did capture the final point of the evening when she took down Violetta Shatalova 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles flight to make it a 5-2 final score in favor of Western Kentucky.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Tuesday when they host Campbellsville (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference match at 1 p.m. CT.
