Women's Tennis drops heartbreaker to Western Carolina

RICHMOND, Ky. -- No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis fell to NCAA's Western Carolina (N.C.) 4-3 today in both team's season opener at the Greg Adams Tennis Center at Eastern Kentucky University.

The Blue Raiders (0-1) captured the doubles point and the first two singles points, but the the Catamounts (1-0) proved to be too much down the stretch in the 4-3 win.

Maria Prados Cid and Fiona Curty won the first match of the day in the second-seeded doubles match as the Blue Raider tandem swept Lauren McCall and Jordan Strickland 6-0.

Western Carolina bounced back to take the third-seeded doubles match -- Elizabeth Ansari and Madison Riley defeated Alex Shchipakina and Gabriella Pedroza 6-1 -- to force a decisive match in the top-seeded match.

Natalia Kattah and Minja Gligic did not disappoint as the Blue Raider tandem cruised to a 6-2 win over Savannah Taranto and Alexa Webb to give Lindsey Wilson the 1-0 lead entering singles play.

Lindsey Wilson carried momentum from the doubles win into singles play.

Curty opened the singles matches with a win at the fourth-seeded match. She extends her singles winning streak to 17 straight matches -- dating back to last season -- with a 6-4, 6-1 win over McCall.

Shchipakina extended the Blue Raiders' lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Strickland in the No. 2 match.

Webb ignited the Western Carolina comeback in the third-seeded match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gligic to cut the team deficit to 3-1. Taranto added a 6-0, 7-6 win over Kattah in the top-seeded match to inch the Catamounts within one of the Blue Raiders with two matches remaining.

Riley knotted the overall match in the fifth-seeded battle, defeating Prados Cid 6-4, 6-4. The Catamounts closed out the comeback win in the sixth-seeded match as Ansari handed Pedroza a 6-1, 6-4 defeat.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 4, as the Blue Raiders travel to Bellarmine (Ky.) in Louisville, Ky.
