MOBILE, Ala. – The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team recorded its second-straight sweep at the national tournament with a 5-0 win over Indiana Wesleyan in the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders (21-4) advance to the program's ninth all-time national semifinal including the fifth in a row. Lindsey Wilson faces 11th-seeded William Woods (Mo.) on Friday afternoon in the semifinals. The Owls upset No. 6-seeded San Diego Christian (Calif.) on Wednesday and No. 3-seeded SCAD Savannah (Ga.) 5-4 on Thursday to earn a spot in the semis.
The second-seeded Blue Raiders dominated doubles play over the 10th-seeded Wildcats (37-9) en route to an early 3-0 lead.
Minja Gligic and Jovana Peric (ranked No. 23 in doubles) scored the first Blue Raider points of the day after beating Olivia Reed and Ellen Hornett 8-3 at the second-seeded doubles flight. In the lone ranked doubles matchup, Fiona Curty and Maria Prados Cid (ranked No. 7) took down Alex Mella and Lizzie Bauss (ranked No. 13) by an 8-3 margin to make it 2-0. Alex Shchipakina and Natalia Kattah completed the doubles sweep after they defeated Rachel Bottorff and Mikayla Marazzi 8-2 for the 3-0 advantage heading to singles play.
Curty (ranked No. 41 in singles) quickly dispatched Klein at the No. 4 singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to make it a 4-0 LWC lead.
Peric then sealed a spot for the Blue Raiders in the national semifinals as she cruised past Reed at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0, to complete the 5-0 sweep.
Before the match ended, Shchipakina, Gligic, Prados Cid and Kattah were all up a set in their respective singles matches, with three of the Blue Raiders also leading in set two.
First serve for the NAIA National Semifinals is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at the Mobile Tennis Center with a spot in the national championship on the line.
