Women's Tennis blanks Cumberland in MSC Tournament Semifinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's tennis beat fourth-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) 5-0 today in the Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals at the Warren East Tennis Courts.

The Blue Raiders (11-2) meet second-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday in the tournament finals. The Patriots beat third-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) 5-3 in the other semifinal.

Minja Gligic and Jovana Peric did not drop a game in an 8-0 win over Ana Maria Collazos and Belen Salazar in the top-seeded match to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 team lead.

Lina Sachica Ramos and Lucia Mora Diaz pushed Lindsey Wilson in front 2-0 with an 8-5 win over Marianela Landi and Stefanie Navaratnam in the third-seeded match. Ramos and Diaz won the final four games of the match for the comeback win.

Fiona Curty and Chiara Epifani made doubles a clean sweep for the Blue Raiders in the second-seeded match. The Blue Raider tandem led Ainhoa Garrido and Joana Bou Barcelo 5-2 only to have the Phoenix comeback and tie the one-set match at 7-7. Curty and Epifani broke to take an 8-7 lead only to be broken, forcing a tiebreak.

The Blue Raiders led 3-1 and 6-2 before the Phoenix won three straight points to climb within 6-5 in the tiebreak. But a double fault proved to be the final point of the match giving the Blue Raiders the 9-8 (5) win.

Lindsey Wilson claimed the team win by winning the only two singles matches to finish.

The remaining matches were stopped once the Blue Raiders reached the five team points.

Peric defeated Landi 6-1, 6-2 in the second-seeded match to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-0 lead. Ramos closed out the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Collazos in the fourth-seeded match.

Lindsey Wilson led three of the four other singles matches when play was halted.

With tomorrow afternoon's balky forecast, the championship matches have been scheduled for 8 a.m. CT at Warren East Tennis Courts.
