Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 11-ranked and No. 1-seed Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated Georgetown (Ky.) 3-2 in a tightly contested battle at Walter S. Reuling Stadium this evening.
Nathaniel Opoku had a game scoring two goals in the victory pushing his total to 16 goals on the season while also notching an assist in the match. Alvaro Verwey also got on the score sheet, finishing his first goal of the season while Cyrus Harmon picked up an assist alongside Julien Gastaldy.
The Blue Raiders (12-2-1, 11-1 MSC), who outshot the Tigers 23-11, will now move onto the semifinal of the Mid-South Conference tournament and will face No. 4-seed Bethel (Tenn.) on Nov. 10th in Bowling Green, Ky. Game times will be announced at a later date.
It was the home team who got on the board first as Opoku combined with Harmon on the edge of the box with the midfielder sliding in a perfect through ball to the foot of the Ghanaian forward, who simply finished into the bottom left corner giving the goalkeeper no chance to make a save. The assist is the seventh of the season for Harmon.
Nearing the end of the first half, the Tigers found a way back into the match as Sebastian Bocaz Canales received a pass in the center of the box from Donut Juhasz who finished into the top corner of the net to make things even at 1-1 into the break.
The next 45 minutes were full of emotion for both teams as the visitors notched the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute in a wild sequence that saw Henrique Cavalini out of his box to clear a ball played over the top. Cavalini mishandled his clearance allowing Mark Zimmerman to collect the ball for the Tigers on the edge of the box who then squared it to Canales who finished it off into an empty net for the 2-1 lead.
The Blue Raiders faced an uphill battle with 10 minutes remaining in the match but faced the adversity well finding the equalizer through substitute Verwey after he finished off a low cross from Opoku in the center of the box to tie it up at 2-2 in the 85th minute. The goal is the first of the season for Verwey while Opoku picks up his fifth assist of the season.
Opoku then found the winning goal for the Blue Raiders just minutes later, getting his foot to a shot from Gastaldy right on the goal line after an initial clearance from a free-kick situation for the Blue Raiders. The two goals from Opoku tonight push his season total to 16 while Gastaldy registers his third assist of the season.
The Blue Raiders will face the Bethel Wildcats in the semifinal match on Nov. 10th in Bowling Green, Ky. Game times will be announced at a later date.
