Men's Soccer Defeats WVU Tech; Advances to Final of NAIA Opening Round Bracket

Box Score

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team (10-3-2, 8-1-2 MSC) defeated WVU Tech (12-4, 7-1 RSC) 2-0 Thursday afternoon to advance to the final of the Hattiesburg bracket in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament.

David Ibrahimkadic led the Blue Raiders on the afternoon with five shots in the game while Ezequiel Hernandez led the team with three shots on goal, one of them being the opening goal of the match. David Coffey made the only save in the match for the Blue Raiders as the team outshot the Golden Bears 18-12 with a 10-1 shot on goal mark.

The beginning of the match was a quiet one, but things got much louder after twenty minutes when Neville Morgan connected with Hernandez on a low cross into the box for his third goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. With that assist, Morgan ties his career-high in team assists at seven on the season. Moments later in the half, Julien Gastaldy picked up the ball at the edge of the box, beat two defenders with a nifty move, and fired a shot into the far-left corner for the 2-0 lead and his second goal of the season.

The Blue Raiders kept firing away in the second half, with Cyrus Harmon, Hernandez, Ibrahimkadic, and Morgan all getting a chance to widen the Blue Raider lead. WVU Tech's best opportunity came in the 67th minute as a ball pinged around in the box and nearly found its way into the net but was eventually cleared. The Blue Raiders held out for the victory in the end, securing their sixth shut out of the season and move on to the next round of the tournament.

Lindsey Wilson now awaits their next opponent in either No. 4-seed Missouri Baptist or host No. 1-seed William Carey (Miss.) in the final of the Hattiesburg bracket in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament. The winner of the final will move onto play in the final site of the competition in Columbia County, Georgia. Kickoff is set for Saturday, April 24 at 5 p.m. CT.
