Women's Tennis Advances at NAIA with 4-0 win over Saint Katherine

MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 14-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis won its opening match today at the NAIA National Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Blue Raiders (16-2) swept No. 23-ranked and 19th-seeded Saint Katherine (Calif.) 4-0 to advance to tomorrow's second round. Lindsey Wilson is slated to play No. 3-seeded Xavier (La.) at 9 a.m. CT.

The Blue Raiders captured the doubles point in dramatic fashion to take a 1-0 lead entering singles play.

After splitting the first two matches, Parisa Rachdanone and Salome Sposetti won the third-seeded match over Mckenna Mountain and Ashley Duncan 7-5 in a tiebreak.

In the most impressive result of the day, Alexandra Parra and Lucia Mora -- ranked No. 10 in NAIA doubles -- beat the 12th best doubles team in the NAIA, Laura Eugenio and Nadine Heckert, 6-0 in the top-seeded match.

Saint Katherine's Evi Schellekens and Ella Marshall evened the match in the second-seeded match with a 6-4 win over Reshma Challarapu and Carla Alibert to set up the dramatic doubles finish.

Lindsey Wilson needed just three singles matches to claim the team win -- all coming from the bottom portion of the lineup.

Rachdanone pushed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0 in the fourth-seeded match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Schellekens. Sposetti quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Duncan at No. 5 singles.

Yuno Oe completed the sweep in the sixth-seeded match with a 6-4, 6-2 over Marshall.

Each of the Blue Raiders in the remaining three matches was up a set when play was stopped after the decisive point was claimed.

Lindsey Wilson faces Xavier at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
