Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team is leaving Tennessee with two pivotal victories. After garnering revenge against Bethel University on Monday evening, the Blue Raiders stepped into the Brewer Sports Center 24 hours later and pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind win over the homestanding Lions of Freed-Hardeman University.
Trailing 12-8 in the match's fifth and deciding set, the visitors slowly began chipping away at their deficit thanks to a series of errors committed by the home side in the closing moments. In fact, each of Lindsey Wilson's last five points of the match was courtesy of four attacking miscues and a ball-handling fault. Even still, the Blue Raiders came up big where needed in the final frame of action, outhitting the Lions 0.280 to .100.
Savanah Pippin continued to flex her muscles on the offensive end for the locals, posting a team-high 14 kills. Aleksandra Wyrzkowska and Elisa Burzio each contributed 11 successful attacks to the Blue Raiders' efforts en route to 52 total kills.
The visitors also stood firm defensively, collecting 84 digs as Camryn Rich and Logan Seagraves each finished with 17, and Natalie Ackermann and Wyrzkowska both chipped in 16.
Rich also went on to record a match-high 42 assists, giving her career double-double number 52.
It did take some time, however, for the Blue Raiders to get in tempo. Freed-Hardeman did well to shut down much of their opposition's attack in the first set, allowing only seven kills on 30 attempts to help them claim a 25-17 win.
Then, in the subsequent frame, the gears began to grind for Lindsey Wilson as they held the Lions to just nine points, marking the fifth different time this season that the locals have limited their opponents to less than 10 points in a single set. The combo of Burzio and Pippin combined for seven of the team's 13 positive strikes in the frame, including each of the Blue Raiders' last four points.
After the Lions came roaring back to win the third set, Lindsey Wilson was faced with a 2-1 hole, something that it had overcome only one other time this season. Despite that fact, the visitors got off to a strong start to the fourth set with a 7-4 scoring stretch, highlighted by kills from Elizabeth Moore, Wyrzkowska, and Pippin. Following a trail of back-and-forth action that eventually knotted the score at 16-16, a Lions' service error sparked what became a 5-1 sequence to push the Blue Raiders ahead 21-17. From that point, the visitors fended off Freed-Hardeman's attempt at a comeback, and back-to-back kills by Pippin effectively clinched the set for the locals, forcing the fifth.
All told, Lindsey Wilson ended the evening hitting just north of 16 percent, but it was the tenacious efforts toward the end of the match that ultimately sealed the deal.
Tuesdays marked the end of the local's October portion of their 2022 schedule. Their attention now turns to two remaining regular season bouts against Georgetown College on November 3 and Shawnee State University on November 6, both of which are scheduled to take place at home.
