Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's tennis failed to back up its regular-season title with a tournament championship today, falling to second-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) 4-1 at the Warren County Tennis and Sports Facility.
Despite the loss, the Blue Raiders (21-3) are on pace -- thanks to their No. 8 national ranking -- to earn an at-large bid into the NAIA National Championships in May.
No. 15-ranked Cumberlands avenged a regular-season loss and a non-conference loss to the Blue Raiders by winning the doubles point and three of the four singles matches to finish. Lindsey Wilson beat the Patriots 5-2 on Mach 15 and 4-1 during the fall season on October 9.
The Patriots (22-5) took a 1-0 lead following doubles wins on courts two and three.
Anastasiia Ivanchenko and Parisa Rachdanone fell 6-2 to Tessa Gray and Meiri Okuwaki on court three while Darija Mladenovic and Reshma Challarapu lost 6-4 to Satsuki Mitani and Melody Fan Schau in the second-seeded match.
The loss was the first of the season for Ivanchenko and Rachdanone as a pair in seven matches.
Alexandra Parra and Lucia Mora led Tomomi Nagao and Johanna Beckman 5-4 when play was stopped after Cumberlands secured the doubles point with two wins.
Mladenovic was the lone Blue Raider to pick up a win in singles play. She defeated Hana Shimeno 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth-seeded match after the Patriots had taken a 3-0 lead with two singles wins. Mladenovic improves to 17-2 this season in singles play.
Cumberlands wrapped up the tournament title on court one as Nagao -- the MSC Women's Tennis Player of the Year -- outlasted Parra 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Cumberlands ends Lindsey Wilson's streak of 16 straight MSC Tournament championships, dating back to the 2005 season, with today's win.
Lindsey Wilson awaits the release of the NAIA National Tournament field and bracket on Wednesday, May 4. The national championship is scheduled for May 17-21 in Mobile, Alabama.
