Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo. – At the recently-renamed Bob Burchard Court at Southwell Complex, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team concluded a demanding five-game road trip with another set of nationally-ranked opponents in Indiana Wesleyan University and hosts Columbia College.
Match One: Lindsey Wilson 1, No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan 3 (16-25, 21-25, 27-25, 18-25)
In Saturday's early-morning match, the fifteenth-ranked Wildcats put down 13 service aces en route to a four-set decision.
Momentum swung to the victors initially, as they opened up a 12-5 lead to begin the first set. A subsequent response by the Blue Raiders was only enough to bring them to within five points of their opposition before the 'Cats pulled away.
In the second frame, the two sides traded small jabs at one another until the set was deadlocked at 20-20. From there, Indiana Wesleyan regained its edge, striking for four kills as part of a 5-1 set-sealing stretch to move ahead 2-0 in the match
Lindsey Wilson mounted a late charge in the following set. After the Wildcats leveled the score at 17-17, the locals put together their strongest run of the contest with a 6-1 scoring swing, during which Alix Stoermer contributed two service aces. Indiana Wesleyan fought back to tie things up again at 25-25, but a miscue followed by a kill from Camryn Rich sealed the set for the Raiders to pull them back into contention.
Neither side could manage much separation in what turned out to be the final set, but a 6-0 Wildcat run in the closing moments proved to be the difference.
Three Blue Raider attackers finished in double-figures, including a season-high 10 kills from Elizabeth Moore.
Match Two: Lindsey Wilson 1, No. 20 Columbia College 3 (8-25, 11-25, 26-24, 21-15)
The second outing of the day got off to a sluggish start for Lindsey Wilson, as the homestanding Cougars outscored their visitors 50-19 to swiftly grab a two-set lead.
In the third set, it was the serving efforts of Elisa Burzio that rescued the locals and ultimately helped them force a fourth set. With Columbia ahead 23-20, back-to-back aces by the sophomore after a Cougar attack error tied the frame at 23-23. Then, a pair of kills by Savanah Pippin and Madison Bidwell locked up the comeback to extend the match.
Unfortunately, a 10-1 start by the home side in the extra set was too much for the Blue Raiders to overcome.
All told, Lindsey Wilson closed the day with a combined 0.158 attack percentage and 92 kills.
Bidwell paced the offense with 24 successful attacks, while Rich's 74 assists and Natalie Ackermann's 41 digs were also top marks for the Blue Raiders on the day.
Next on the docket for the locals is the 2022 home opener versus Brescia University, which is set for Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. CST at Biggers Sports Center.
