Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – There is a saying that goes, "The third time is a charm," and on Friday afternoon at Bowling Green High School, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team channeled all of its willpower and strength to upset top-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) and advance to the Mid-South Conference tournament championship on Saturday.
The emotional result comes after the Tigers got the better of the Blue Raiders in their two regular-season meetings, but Lindsey Wilson would not be denied this time.
"Tonight, we played consistent, clean volleyball," said head coach Aubrey Beaumont postgame. "Everyone did their jobs, and we came together as a team."
Lindsey Wilson outhit Campbellsville .182 to .112. The Blue Raiders also produced five more kills and held a 9 to 4 edge on service aces.
Elizabeth Moore, Lindamara Conceicao, and Savanah Pippin each cracked double-figures on the attack with 12, 11, and 10 kills, respectively. Meanwhile, Luiza Goncalves recorded another double-double behind a career-best 43 assists and 10 digs.
Defensively, Natalie Ackermann led four Blue Raiders in double-digit digs with 22, followed by Ola Wyrzykowska's 16.
Lindsey Wilson got the start it was looking for in the first set, as a kill by Pippin and an ace from Rachele Tessari helped spark an 8-2 Blue Raider run to put them ahead 9-3. The Tigers put together a string of points of their own to cut their deficit down to 12-10, but after a Lindsey Wilson timeout, the Blue Raiders picked back up again with five of the next seven points. Still, Campbellsville responded and even fought off three set points before an Elisa Burzio kill ended the opener, 25-23.
The action in the second set shifted back and forth from the start. Lindsey Wilson possessed multiple three-point leads that the Tigers continuously erased until eventually sneaking in front to take the frame 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1.
In the crucial third set, Campbellsville took control early with a 10-3 lead. A timeout by coach Beaumont calmed down her team, and a subsequent Tiger service error put Lindsey Wilson in business to charge back and tie the score at 11-11. Points were traded from that point, but a late Blue Raider advantage slipped away and set the Tigers up with a chance to steal the set. Trailing 24-21, Lindsey Wilson utilized back-to-back Campbellsville errors, a kill by Moore, and a Goncalves ace to flip the script and go up by one, 25-24. The Tigers stayed alive, however, knotting the score two more times. Finally, consecutive strikes from Burzio and Moore gave the Blue Raiders the all-important 2-1 edge in the match.
Lindsey Wilson trailed only once in the final set and went on to outscore Campbellsville 11-4 after falling behind to punctuate the upset.
The Blue Raiders will compete for the Mid-South Conference tournament championship at 3 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 11 at Bowling Green High School against Cumberlands (Ky.). The Patriots won their playoff opener on Thursday in a three-set decision over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), then defeated Georgetown (Ky.) in four sets on Friday to punch their finals ticket.
