COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Women's flag football is coming to Lindsey Wilson College beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler announced today.
The addition is the second sport in three years for Lindsey Wilson athletics. Women's wrestling was added in September 2023 and begins its inaugural season this weekend.
Women's flag football is the 28th athletic program and the 13th women's sport at Lindsey Wilson. The department also sponsors 12 men's sports and three co-ed sports.
"I want to thank the Board of Trustees for approving the addition of women's flag football to our program offerings," Pooler said. "The NAIA has been very progressive in adding sports that give institutions like ours the opportunity to attract students who would otherwise not consider Lindsey Wilson. As we continue to look for ways to grow enrollment on our main campus, the decision to add a competitive varsity program for women was easy."
Women's flag football -- played during the spring semester -- is the lone NAIA emerging sport with more than 20 participating schools. Up to seven players compete on an 80-yard long by 40-yard wide field over four 12-minute quarters.
While the women's flag football has not yet reached championship status at the national level, the NAIA does award a team title following pool and bracket play in early May.
Lindsey Wilson joins Campbellsville (Ky.) as the only two NAIA schools from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Schools from Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Tennessee also participate in the NAIA in women's flag football.
"We are now focused on hiring a coach that will provide a great experience for our student-athletes, while providing resources that allow our program to compete at the highest level in the NAIA," Pooler said. "I'm excited to get started and am looking forward to our first game at Parnell Family Stadium."
